Queen Kusama
With « Queen Kusama », Geoffrey Bouillot pays tribute to the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, a major figure in contemporary art. Created in acrylic paint, the work deconstructs her portrait into a combination of geometric shapes and monochromatic shades, creating a composition where abstraction and figuration meet. This reinterpretation highlights Kusama’s enduring influence on the international art scene while also placing her image within Geoffrey Bouillot’s unique visual universe. As the artist explains: « Queen Kusama : this is not a literal portrait of Yayoi Kusama. But she has exhibited extensively at Beaubourg and for me she represents the Japanese Frida Kahlo. In spirit, it is a painting that was conceived to be exhibited at the Centre Pompidou. Unlike the other pieces, this painting is not inspired by an existing painting but depicts Yayoi Kusama herself, a key figure in the collections of the Centre Pompidou. I depicted her sitting on her famous pumpkin and surrounded by her organic sculptures, while translating her emblematic dots into my system of volumes.»
