The principle of the Mario Worldz Project is one of the aspects I like most about the work of In The Woup. The artist starts with a character immediately recognizable as Mario, then transforms it into a hero, an icon or a figure known to everyone. Each work thus becomes a meeting between two universes, with a series of references that are almost immediately understood.
In this piece, Mario is dressed as Aladdin. The colors, costume, and elements characteristic of the Disney character are all present, while maintaining the pixelated silhouette typical of In The Woup’s work. It is this blend of two very popular imaginaries that gives the work its playful, nostalgic, and contemporary character.
The mosaic is entirely hand-made from brilliant Briare enamels, then glued onto a custom-cut plexiglass. The support precisely conforms to the silhouette of the figure, without frame or additional contour. This choice is voluntary: the work must give the impression of having been directly placed on the wall, like a street art intervention created by the artist in your interior.
The mounting system installed on the back, consisting of suspenders and compensation wedges, allows for a slight offset from the wall. The piece thus appears to float, while still maintaining the feeling of a work attached to the urban space. This is a discreet detail, but it greatly contributes to the presence of the work once installed.
This series dedicated to the Disney universe was created in occasion of Solid’Art Paris, an event organized for the benefit of Secours Populaire. Aladin is a unique piece, accompanied by its certificate of authenticity signed by the artist and directly from his studio.
What I particularly like about this work is that it perfectly sums up the approach of In The Woup. He doesn’t just reproduce a well-known character; he creates a new image by bringing together several generations, several cultures, and several memories. Mario and Aladdin are immediately recognizable, but the encounter between the two belongs entirely to the artist’s universe.
